Despite the fact that our teeth and surrounding elements are so strong, a lot can go wrong in the mouth. Teeth can become infected or damaged, our jaws can begin to hurt, and our bites can be off. Fortunately, there are many different types of dentists that specialize in the different components of oral health. Periodontists, for example, are experts in preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease.

Patients who visit our San Francisco periodontist will have their gum checked thoroughly. We examine for gumline recession, loose teeth, and any bite issues. The periodontal pockets are located in between the teeth and gums, and a probing instrument can check these areas for inflammation. X-rays may also be necessary in order to inspect the bone below the gums.

There are more than three million cases of periodontal disease reported per year. You may be suffering from periodontitis if your gums are swollen, uncharacteristically red, receding, or bleeding. Other symptoms include bad breath, toothaches, or loose teeth. There are several methods employed to treat the disease, beginning with scaling a root planning or a root surface debridement.

Periodontists are also experts in the placement of dental implants, further ensuring your continued oral health.
