Things to Not Do During Invisalign Treatment

Junge Frau setzt lächelnd Zahnspange in den MundIt’s exciting to be on the path to straighter teeth and a healthier smile. Invisalign is a great way to do this, as it offers several benefits during treatment, such as removability and comfort. To ensure that your treatment goes smoothly and that your teeth remain healthy, there are some habits and activities that you should avoid.

Our dentist in Rocklin encourages all patients to quit smoking during treatment with Invisalign. In fact, they may even exclude it as an option if you are a smoker. This is because the heat and ingredients in cigarettes can damage the aligners, causing them to warp and become weak. If your dentist approves, Invisalign might be a great reason and motivator to stop smoking, leading to an overall healthier life.

Patients should also be sure to keep a good eye on their aligners. If they are lost or damaged, it could take some time to get a replacement. This can elongate treatment time considerably, as not only will the teeth not be exposed to pressure from the aligner, but can also begin to revert back to their old places during this time. To avoid this issue, be sure to place your aligners in a holder when taking them off to eat so they are not misplaced or broken.

Dental Health and Orthodontics

Many are aware of the basic point of orthodontics – to straighten the teeth. But many are also unaware of everything that orthodontic treatment can do for our teeth, mouth, and overall health.

When teeth are crooked, they can overlap and cover each other. This can make it difficult to clean each tooth properly. Spots of certain teeth can be missed because areas are hard to reach with a toothbrush. This will lead to a buildup of decay, which will result in cavities and possibly even periodontal disease. Straightening the teeth with braces or other appliances will eliminate this issue.

Certain orthodontic problems can also affect the jaw and facial structure. If you suffer from a prolonged bite complication, more pressure can be put on one side of the mouth. This can cause issues such as TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disease, wherein one or both of the jaw joints become inflamed or shifted. TMJ can cause pain in the jaw, face, and surrounding areas, as well as lock jaw, tinnitus, and other issues.

Our Rocklin dentist will recommend orthodontic treatment to eliminate any risk of these and similar problems. They can work with you to determine the best appliance and treatment plan for you.

The Science Behind Invisalign

Prospective users of Invisalign usually have one question to start: how Invisalign works. The technology dates only to the 1990s, where it was founded under the manufacturer name Align. The founders believed in a more visual approach to orthodontic work, and figured out a push mechanism to contrast with the pull mechanism of traditional braces.

In terms of composition, Invisalign trays, or aligners, are mostly made of polyurethane—a medical-grade polymer, with a few additives thrown in. These combine to give the material its thinness, translucence, and strength.

Where braces are powered by rubber bands and archwires, the polyurethane Invisalign aligners apply pressure progressively. This means each set of aligners is designed to follow the one before it, with a new set replacing the old one at a predetermined rate—usually every two weeks. You must wear your aligners in the exact order specified by your Invisalign dentist in Los Angeles—the aligners come numbered to help you out.

Invisalign is primarily a straightener. Its science is directed at rotated, crowded, or unevenly spaced teeth that do not involve any deeper orthodontic issues. If you have any history of malocclusion, for example, your dentist may refer you to another orthodontist, or another product.

If all goes well, your teeth will be straight after about a year of service.

What Does it Mean to Need a Bone Graft?

Despite the fact that the bones in our mouth (such as our teeth and jaw) are very strong, there are still unfortunately many things that can go wrong. Our teeth can be knocked-out and our jaw tissue can diminish and loose its strength. In this latter case, our North Hollywood dentist might recommend a bone graft.

Bone grafts are usually needed after a patient has lost a tooth, whether due to accident or extraction. This is because the jaw bone tissue is no longer stimulated by the tooth or teeth in that area, and therefore begins to resorb.

In order to replace the tooth or teeth with implants, or to correct the shape of the face, a higher density in the jaw bone is needed. A bone graft can accomplish this in one of three ways. Most commonly, bone is taken from elsewhere in your jaw or your body, such as the hip. Some patients prefer synthetic material to replace jaw bone tissue. Donor tissue is also an option.

The recovery process is fairly routine. You will be given instructions and antibiotics, and told to avoid certain foods. The new tissue or material will fuse with your jaw bone tissue over the course of several months and stimulate growth, at which point you will become a candidate for dental implants.

If you are unhappy with the way that your teeth appear, it can affect your day-to-day interactions with others. Missing teeth, stains, chips, and gaps can really affect your self-esteem. When the appearance of your teeth affects your willingness to smile, you may want to think about a smile makeover.

While a smile makeover may include filling cavities and repairing damaged teeth, the focus is generally more on the appearance of your teeth. There are many cosmetic dental procedures that are available to help with just about any problem you may have with your teeth. Just take a look at some smile makeover before and after photos to see how much of a change can be made with the right treatment options.

If you need some work done to make your smile more attractive, a smile makeover could be the right choice. Missing teeth can be replaced with removable or more permanent fixtures. Whatever issues you may have, your dentist can make the changes necessary.

Do Teeth Whitening Strips Work?

Three young people smiling

Strips are among several teeth-whitening options sold in stores today. Some patients do find benefit in whitening strips, but not all get the results they need. Here is how teeth-whitening strips work and how well they fulfill their purpose.

How Whitening Strips Work

Whitening strips are made of plastic and coated with small amounts of peroxides, the same chemicals used in professional teeth whitening. When the strips are placed over the teeth, they conform to the shapes and hold the peroxides in place so that bleaching can occur. Peroxide concentrations vary, with the strongest strips containing solutions of up to 10 percent.

Limitations and Risks

Like other teeth-whitening products, strips are designed for mild to moderate stains. The lack of a barrier separating the strips from the gums makes gum irritation a risk. Combined with the need to use the strips repeatedly for moderate stains, this can make the system impractical in some cases. Patients with severe stains are unlikely to get good results from strips.

The use of strips is best limited to mild stain removal and smile maintenance. When heavier stains are present, patients can benefit from visiting our Beverly Hills tooth whitening dentist instead. At a consultation with our dentist, you can learn more about how strips compare to professional whitening.
